kansai yamamoto 90s ‘buwaaah’ motorcycle varsity jacket
details
before the invasion of the japanese deconstruction movement in the 80s, the fashion world recognised japan for their eclectic designs that screamed maximalism. kansai yamamoto was the japanese representative of the outrageous and theatrical garments that were in vogue during that era. there was a tasteful touch to the maximalism concept, as the garments fused a mixture of dissimilar textiles and prints that seemed unexpectedly harmonious.
this piece in particular features a varsity jacket in a predominantly muted yellow colorway. kansai yamamoto’s eccentrism appears in the form of a patchwork design, with a colorful depiction of a motorbike riding scene plastered on the back of the jacket and on the chest at the front. the leather sleeves are reminiscent of the original varsity jackets made during the earlier days. other details include a quilted lining, snap buttons down the middle, leather trimmed pockets on the side and white contrasting ribbings along the collars and hems.
