yohji yamamoto 80s deconstructed abstract wool coat
details
yohji yamamoto is a revered designer that pioneered the idea of androgyny through oversized garments that were designed ‘genderless’. the asexual nature of the garments forces the viewer to only focus on the shape and the way a fabric drapes. unsurprisingly, yohji prefers darker colors and different textures to accentuate the movement of the garment. through this specific approach and avant garde silhouettes, his work has shown to be timeless and often an integral part of the consumer’s wardrobe.
this piece in particular comes from the extremely early days of the brand (as seen from the label). the coat is made out of a medium weight wool with slits near the armpit area. the coat can be worn in 2 different ways; in a conventional way where the inner garment peeks out from the armholes or the unconventional way where the arms are put through the armpit slits. this piece also features a garment-dyeing effect that has off-colored patches that appear sporadically throughout the coat.
